Qualifying is Simple

Qualifying is simple, applicants must:

  1. Be 18 years of age or older within the the calendar year in which they are applying to study.
    Consideration may be given for younger students who have completed high school and meet all other admission requirements.
  2. Meet the English language requirement or complete the Academic English Language program offered at NIC. English language proficiency results must be taken within the last two years.
  3. Meet other academic and admission requirements for your chosen program. Full admission requirements are found under each program description.

English Language Requirements

NIC courses are taught in English. To be admitted directly into academic programs, you must meet the specific English proficiency requirements for your type of program, as detailed below

NIC offers Academic English Language program, for anyone who does not meet the English proficiency requirement listed for their program. Learn more

To meet the English language requirement for academic programs, students must have completed:

  • BC English 12 or BC English First Peoples 12 with a minimum grade C+ (67%); or
  • NIC Academic English Language Program, with a minimum grade C+ in ESL 089 and ESL 090.
    Or have achieved the following minimum standards on English language proficiency results within the last two years:
    • Academic IELTS 6.0 overall with no individual band less than 5.5;
    • TOEFL iBT 80 overall with no section less than 19;
    • CAEL 60 and writing 60;
    • TOEFL 550 (Code 8538);
    • PTE Academic 54 minimum; or
    • Equivalency as determined by North Island College, Admissions Department.

Submit official English language proficiency results (within the last two years) which meets one of the following minimum standards:

  • Academic IELTS 6.0 overall with no band less than 5.5;
  • TOEFL iBT 80 overall with no subsection less than 19;
  • CAEL 60 and writing 60;
  • TOEFL 550 (Code 8538); or
  • PTE Academic 54 minimum; or
  • Equivalency as determined by North Island College, Admissions Department; or
  • Graduates from an accredited diploma or degree program from a recognized college or university where English was the medium of instruction, and English is an official language of the country, are also accepted as meeting the International Language Requirement. Those countries include:
